ABD’Lİ MİSYONERLERİN GÖZÜNDE 1830-1917 YILLARI TÜRKLER VE ERMENİLER, BÖLÜM 4

Metin içinde de görüldüğü gibi, misyonerlerden kaynaklanan sorunlar
nedeniyle Amerikan hükümeti birkaç kez tehdit amacı ile savaş gemilerini ve filolarını Osmanlı karasularına ve limanlarına göndermiş, birkaç kez iki ülkenin sıcak çatışmaya girmesi durumu ortaya çıkmıştır.
Bu yıllarda Amerikan misyonerlerinin en çok ilgilendiği Osmanlı azınlığı
Ermenilerdir.

Misyonerlerin Osmanlı tebaası içerisinde en çok ilgilendikleri ve propaganda larına karşılık bulabildikleri Osmanlı tebaası Ermenilerdir ve misyonerler Ermeni isyanlarında yadsınamaz bir role sahip olmuşlardır.
İki ülke diplomatik ilişkilerinin I. Dünya Savaşına kadar geçen 84 yıllık seyri içerisinde Osmanlı Devleti büyük oranda beklentilerinin karşılığını bulamamış, ilişkiler ABD’nin pragmatist politikası zemininde yürümüştür. Bu durumda da misyonerlerin etkisi büyüktür.
Tüm bunlara ek olarak misyonerlerin ve onlarla sıkı işbirliği içinde çalışan Amerikalı diplomatların ABD kamuoyunda oluşturmuş oldukları Türk karşıtı, nefrete dayalı söylem iki ülke halkları arasındaki anlaşmazlıkların temelini teşkil etmiştir. Amerikan halkı uzun süre Türkleri tanımadan Türklerden nefret etmiştir ve bu algının en büyük nedeni misyonerlerin organize ettiği kara propaganda olmuştur.

29 Misyonerler, Robert Kolejini kurma çalışmalarını 1857 yılında başlatmışlardı.
Kolejin kurulması için önce Rumeli Hisarı yanında o dönemde Paris Büyükelçisi olan Ahmet Vefik Paşa’nın arazisi istenmiş fakat A. Vefik Paşa arazisini satmaya razı olmamıştı. Bunun üzerine en iyi olabilecek ikinci yer, Kuruçeşme’de satın alınarak Robert Koleji’nin inşaatı planlanmıştı. Fakat A. Vefik Paşa bir yıl sonra arazisini satmaya razı olunca iki parça halinde Kolejin arsası 1.400 İngiliz Sterlini ödenerek satın alındı ve 1862 yılında inşaatın başlaması planlandı. Bu esnada
Kolej eğitime başlamıştı. Amerika’nın İstanbul’da bir kolej açmasına en büyük muhalefet Fransa, Rusya ve Roman Katolik Kilisesi’nden gelmekteydi. Misyonerler, Washington Ortaelçisi Bulak Bey’i de devreye sokarak Kolej inşaatı için izin almaya çalıştı. Gerekli izni sağlayacak olan Padişah iradesi 1868 yılında Amerikalı amiral Farragaut’un İstanbul ziyareti esnasında verildi. Robert Koleji’nin İngilizce eğitim verecek olmasına karşı Fransızlar da 1868 yılında Fransızca eğitim verecek olan Galatasaray Lisesi’ni açmışlardır. Robert Koleji’nde öğrencilikten öğretmenliğe atanan ilk Osmanlı vatandaşları Hagopos Diyedciyan
isimli Ermeni ve Petco Gorbanoff isimli Bulgardı. Kolej’de öğretmen olabilmek için misyonerlik eğitiminden geçme şartı vardı. Bilgi için bkz.
